Cellma- Working to Increase Safety
This article is the third of the series to look at the benefits achieved from using Cellma, and this week focuses on how Cellma can improve the safety of a service.

Improvements in Safety from using Cellma
Registration and scheduling:
 
  • A thorough duplication checker ensures that there is only ever one record per patient
  • Cellma can maintain a Master Patient Index that includes demographic data at the highest level of detail possible; keeping all necessary information up-to-date.
  • In addition to NHS numbers and any other local identifies used, all patients will be assigned a Cellma number to guarantee the correct identification of a patient.  
  • Emails or SMS messages can be sent to patients, reminding them of forthcoming appointments; therefore reducing the number of non-attendees.  
  • Efficient methods for tracking transfer patients through electronically recording all departure and arrival times.
  • Discharges are integrated into a patients’ care pathway, leading to the automatic generation of discharge summaries and letters.
Assessments and Patient Management:
 
  • Clinical entries are coded using SNOMED CT which then can be mapped ICD 10 and Read codes to maintain consistency across assessments.
  • All data entered, including its author and the date of input are monitored; assuring a resilient audit trail.
  • Assessments are aligned with best practice standards to certify clinical governance, for example NICE falls guidelines (CG21).
  • Full patient history can be viewed from one summary screen, enabling a healthcare professional to select key items at a glance.
  • Ability to edit/change assessments in line with any alterations in service requirements.
  • Viewing sequential data for a patient over time can clearly demonstrate any rapid changes in their health.  
  • Automatic generation of letters, patient summaries and discharge summaries to capture all essential data.
Safety and Security Measures:
 
  • Reminders can be set in a patients integrated care pathway to prompt members from multi-disciplinary teams to carry out specific tasks.
  • Flags and alerts can be generated throughout the system to notify users of any contraindications, allergic reactions and drug interactions.
  • Links to the British National Formulae (BNF) and MartinDale provide immediate access for prescribing guidance.
  • Automatic generation of prescriptions eliminates the risk of human error, such as illegible prescriptions.
  • Information viewed by users is determined by their access privileges, dictated to by their role in the healthcare organisation.  
  • Cellma adheres to all NHS and European patient data security policies to ensure that patient’s data has the uppermost protection.
Order communications: 

Seamless links to all Cellma modules and HL7 integration with 3rd party health information systems such as pharmacy and pathology system speeds up the care given to patients. Links to Cellma’s pharmacy module, enable users to monitor stock levels, setting alerts to prompt order supplies, ensuring that all consumables are adequately equipped.

Reporting:
All statutory, local, national and research reports can be generated automatically in Cellma using the most appropriate method for the health professional at that time including:
  • Dashboards
  • Ad-hoc reporting
  • Pre-defined detailed reports
