Diagnosis and Management of Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes is the type of diabetes that typically develops in children and young adults. Treatment to control the blood glucose level is with insulin injections and a healthy diet. Other treatments aim to reduce the risk of complications and include reducing blood pressure if it is high, and to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has offered some key suggestions for the effective management and diagnosis of type 1 diabetes in children, young adults and adults. The following is an outline of the suggestions proposed.

Children and Young People should be:

  • offered timely and ongoing opportunities to access information about development, management and effects of type 1 diabetes, to ensure informed decision making.
  • informed that the target for long-term glycaemic control is an HbA1c level of less than 7.5% without frequent disabling hypoglycaemia.
  • offered screening for coeliac disease, thyroid disease, retinopathy, microalbuminuria and blood pressure.
  • offered timely and ongoing access to mental health professionals because they may experience psychological disturbances (such as anxiety, depression, behavioural and conduct disorders and family conflict).

Adults should be offered:

  • diabetes services that are organised to ensure patient-centred care.
  • a multidisciplinary team to provide them with optimal advice.
  • culturally appropriate education after diagnosis. It should be repeated as requested and acording to annual review of need.
  • assesments for early markers and features of eye, kidney, nerve, foot, arterial risk and arterial damage at annual intervals.

RioMed understands the importance of timely diagnosis and effective management of diabetes. The monitoring of patients' lifestyles is of particular importance when trying to achieve optimal care for this illness. It is also key to keep a detailed record of the patients' clinical journey, for the purpose of evaluating improvements or deterioration in their condition. Cellma has the capacity to fully facilitate the requirements of physicians in order to competently diagnose, treat and manage diabetic patients.
