| New Sexually transmitted infections near 0.5 m in the UK |
|
Figures show that last year in the UK there were over half a million new cases of STIs. These figures are primarily reflective of young people, with the highest rates being displayed in urban and deprived areas. One in 10 of 15-24 year olds with an STI become infected again within a year. The rise is in part due to more testing, and the use of tests which are more sensitive at picking up signs of an infection - but experts believe unsafe sexual behaviour is also part of the story.
Whilst it may be difficult to ensure that safe sexual behaviour is practised, it is rewardingly more practical to focus efforts on improving the efficiency of the sexual health service, to ensure that patients receive timely and optimal treatment. Cellma, Riomed’s complete health information system has proven over time to contribute to safe, efficient and high quality service. It is fully integrated, including patients personal lifestyle details and partner information. Facilitating patient communicaton, notifying patients partners after testing is possible, by utilising the information put into the system. This would aid in reducing the increasing amount of persons contracting STIs unknowingly from their partners. Patients who have a high risk of re-infection can be flagged for closer monitoring and follow up, again improving quality of service. Time is saved on the identification and analysis of at risk groups, with the use of Cellma’s reporting functionality. More energy can therefore be focused on treatment of patients.
