World Diabetes Day
Act on Diabetes. Now.

November 14th 2011 marks the third year of focus on ‘diabetes education and prevention’, the theme running between 2009 and 2013. It is hoped the collective impact of initiatives around the world, including flash mobs, monuments lit up blue, community and individual events will help raise awareness of Diabetes.

RioMed continue to support World Diabetes Day. For more information about events and key facts in 2011 please visit http://www.idf.org/worlddiabetesday/about.

There are over 300 million people around the world living with diabetes (International Diabetes Federation 2011), not only does this affect those suffering but also their families. Fuelled by lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diet, smoking and alcohol consumption this number could rise to over 500 million if current trends continue.

During also has a considerable impact on healthcare spending. "Treating diabetes accounts for approximately 10% of NHS spend." (NHS Eyes on Evidence 2011). As diabetes prevalence continues to rise it is essential service efficiency is improved alongside the rise of education and prevention.
