Beaumont hospital is a key hospital in Ireland, located less than 5 km from Dublin itself. With over 820 beds it services the local community of around 290,000 people – providing them emergency and acute care as well as services across 54 medical specialities.
Housed within the hospital is Beaumont’s Diabetes Centre which provides 11 general outpatient clinics per month. In addition, their Day Centre service provides multidisciplinary care to patients and their loved ones. This includes specialists not only in diabetes but dietetics, endocrinology, infusion therapy, cardiology and many other disciplines.
The Diabetes Centre has so many patients passing through its doors every day. However with the systems in place, Beaumont was finding it difficult to keep on top of the administration and consistently deliver effective assessments. Communication to patients and between the multidisciplinary teams was difficult without an efficient letters and communications system. For different specialists in the department, collaboration became more complicated than it needed to be – they were all in need of their own ways to assess, share data and communicate with patients.
To give Diabetes Centre a solution to their issues we put forward several of our modules to implement. Document management was one of the core functions we pitched. This module allows different services to have their own letter formats and dictate when these should be sent out automatically. For most, this was immediately after their clinic. To complement this, each service within the centre was also given access to customisable assessments which provide consistency over the whole of the centre. This data from assessments can be automatically pulled into letters to ensure that the patient and their record are always kept up to date. Finally, integrations with different disciplines which relate to diabetes were also taken into account. This included a lab service which is vital in monitoring glucose levels and the cardiology service which strongly relates to diabetes; streamlining communication and multidisciplinary crossovers.
Since implementing with us Beaumont’s Diabetes Center has seen some great benefits. Administration needs have reduced, with automated letters being sent out immediately after each clinic. Multi-disciplinary teams have also been able to work more effectively, with integrations, assessments and information is automatically pulled into records and letters. As one of our longest-standing customers, we continue to work with them on new challenges and strive to further improve the Diabetes Centre as a whole.
