Wales Respiratory Health Implementation Group (RIG) are made up of a board of respiratory experts and consultants from all over Wales. They meet regularly to discuss how they can improve respiratory health services and patient outcomes. Together, they review and refine services in Wales, liaising with the Welsh Government to effectively implement actions which will make a difference on a patient and national level. What’s more, they also oversee and conduct studies, trials and statistical research projects to further inform the Welsh Government where funding and resources will be best used.
Despite being one cohesive group, RIG is faced with the challenge of making changes that will benefit all seven health boards and four NHS trusts in Wales. Each board has its own online system and portal – all varying in terms of proficiency and technical features. As a result, data is not only fragmented and difficult to access but it can also get lost completely. This leaves patients’ records incomplete, often slowing the process to correct diagnoses and affecting the trajectory of their care pathway.
As a whole, RIG strongly believed that it was essential to have one system which connected all seven health boards. This would centralise all of the data, bringing it to one place which could be accessed by respiratory professionals across Wales.
To provide a solution to RIG’s needs, we put forward our Electronic Patient Record (EPR) – a module of our flagship product Cellma. The EPR will effectively become Wales respiratory’ hub for all patient data. It is a core module which dictates a ‘one-patient, one-record’ structure, were all up-to-date and historical patient information is pulled into one place. As a result, regardless of where the patient is or where they get referred within Wales, their respiratory professional can know all demographic and medical details about them. This will include family history, previous conditions, treatment so far, medications, operations and many other details.
We are currently at a pre-release stage, but the project has been progressing well. Post-implementation and testing, we are confident Cellma’s EPR will make a marked improvement to the way Welsh respiratory services operate and improve patient outcomes too.
