As the business expanded starting in 1997, the provision of consulting services in the area of occupational health and disease management took precedence. RioMed Limited introduced Formis, the original approach to hospital management software. An access database was the application, and it needed to be loaded. The application was typically hosted locally and had a CD-ROM format.
At the time, Formis had been set up at more than 80 locations throughout the UK and Ireland. Rheumatologists, orthopedic surgeons, and elder care doctors make up the majority of the clients. However, as the company expanded, so did the need for software that could handle the extensive demands of these specialties.
RioMed took on the task of developing a web-based application in 1999. This was primarily caused by Formis’ inability to handle the demands placed on it by the hospital’s various specialties, as access and storage were both limited.
RioMed Limited finished making the full transition to Cellma, a web-based application, in 2001. The name was chosen through a company-wide competition and was inspired by comparison to a cell membrane and its modular design. At the time, the idea was for the software to be made up of various components or modules to form a complete hospital management system.
